My enduring memory of Christopher Lee behind the scenes of Lord of the Rings is not the infamous “people don’t scream when you stab them in the back” moment (that Peter Jackson cribbed into King Kong but later deleted). It’s an outtake set in the first movie, with Saruman speaking with Gandalf, where he starts to ascend to his throne, stops short in the middle of a big Saruman speech.

“To advise, persuade – [suddenly breaking character] I’m sorry, I cannot get up these goddamn steps smoothly, Peter. I just can’t.”

The reason why is 1) I have never heard Christopher Lee swear before, but more importantly 2) Apparently neither had any of the actors playing the hobbits because they whisper about this at length in the commentary, and they are so shocked, you guys.

I think about this moment a lot when i think about Christopher Lee

Firstly, that would mean Eru made him that way and is therefore at least partially accountable for what he did, if he deliberately created a being who could only desire to posess and could never know love.

Secondly, he couldn’t know hate.

Love and hate are two sides of the same coin. You can’t feel one without knowing the other. There would be no basis of comparison and the emotion becomes completely meaningless. It’s impossible to feel only good emotions or only bad emotions. Love and hate do not and cannot exist in a vacuum.

Melkor is change and chaos and intense emotion. He is not driven by his desire for control, but by his desire to change. And I think that’s mostly why I love him so much. He wasn’t some Disney-style villain who’s never felt a good emotion ever, on the simple basis that it’s impossible to feel only positive or negative things.

He canonically loved light. The Silmarillion says he desires to posess it, but if the passages about him and light were applied to any other Vala, it would mean they loved it and didn’t merely desire it. The Silmarillion paints Melkor in an overly simplistic way: “this is Morgoth, he is bad, he has never done anything good in his life, we hate him.” It’s an in-universe account written by his enemies. It’s obviously biased against him because that’s just how people work.

Tl:Dr; it’s not possible to exist feeling only positive or negative emotions towards everything at all times. Melkor had to know love in order to know hate.

You guys, the wizard duel between Finrod and Thû is one of my favorite scenes in the whole legendarium, I love it so, so much. :’)

This picture was a WIP in my art folder for a year and while I always meant to finish it, I didn’t plan on spending as much time on it as I did. It’s still super rough, and I may revisit it again sometime in the future when I’m inspired, but for now I’ve gotta move on. XD
